Nothing about pool tiling forgives improvisation. The bonding system has to stay waterproof and slightly elastic through years of immersion, the grout has to shrug off chlorine and constant soaking, and the movement joints have to sit where the shell actually works — miss any of these and tiles peel off at the waterline. Before any tile, we inspect the pool shell and its waterproofing. Tiling over hollow sections or failed waterproofing guarantees the new mosaic detaches at the waterline within a season. We repair the shell first so the finish has something solid to bond to.
Pool tiles are submerged permanently and the structure moves with temperature, so the adhesive must be waterproof and flexible — never a standard interior adhesive. We use the correct system rated for continuous immersion.
Whether it's small-format glass mosaic or larger ceramic, we set it with full coverage and tight, even joints. Mosaic in particular demands precision — uneven joints and lippage show badly underwater and at the waterline.
We finish with pool-grade grout that withstands constant water contact and pool chemicals, and we place expansion and movement joints correctly — at the coping junction especially — so the tiles don't lift as the structure expands.
Pool jobs we're asked to rescue usually failed because the adhesive wasn't waterproof or flexible, the grout couldn't handle the chemicals, the shell waterproofing was already compromised, or movement joints were skipped at the deck-to-coping junction.
