Natural stone we install — and where each one belongs

Nothing gives a Bali villa its sense of place like natural stone: a cool limestone floor, carved paras on a feature wall, speckled terrazzo around a pool. Stone is also the least forgiving surface in Bali's climate. Put the right stone in the right place and seal it, and it ages well for decades; get either wrong and you fight stains, algae and crumbling edges within one wet season. These are the stones we lay most:

  • Paras Bali. Soft, pale volcanic tuff quarried on the island — the stone of temple walls and carved panels. Easy to carve and full of character, but soft and porous, so we use it for sheltered cladding and feature walls, not heavy floors or wet zones.
  • Palimanan. Creamy sandstone from Java for cladding, garden walls and feature surfaces. A little harder than paras, still porous; it needs sealing and shelter from constant salt spray.
  • Andesite (batu candi). Dense grey volcanic stone, naturally anti-slip and rain-tolerant — the most reliable outdoor stone for terraces, paths, steps and pool decks once sealed.
  • Limestone. A workhorse for floors and pool surrounds with a soft natural tone. Dense grades handle outdoor use once sealed; softer grades belong indoors.
  • Terrazzo tiles. Stone chips set in cement or resin, supplied as tiles, for floors, bathrooms and pool decks with a continuous speckled finish.
  • Slate. Dense and naturally textured, good outdoors and around pools, though dark slate gets hot in full sun.
  • Marble. Striking indoors, but soft and acid-sensitive — for dry, sheltered rooms, feature walls and honed bathroom floors only.
  • Sukabumi. The green stone behind Bali's lagoon-coloured pools; see pool tiling for how we lay it underwater.

Indoor or outdoor: matching the stone to the spot

The most common natural stone failure in Bali is the right stone in the wrong place. Indoors, in dry and sheltered rooms, you have the most freedom: marble, polished limestone, terrazzo and paras feature walls all perform well because rain, salt and hard UV never reach them.

Outdoors and around water the rules tighten. A garden path, terrace or pool surround faces monsoon rain, strong sun and, near the coast, salt-laden wind. There you want dense, anti-slip stone — andesite, hard limestone or slate — sealed properly. Soft paras and polished marble stain, grow algae and erode in those conditions. Coastal Canggu, Seminyak and the Uluwatu clifftops are the harshest; inland Ubud trades salt for damp and moss, which favours stone that dries quickly. For terraces see also outdoor and terrace tiling.

How we install natural stone — step by step

1. Check the batch and dry-lay

Stone varies from crate to crate in colour, veining and thickness. We open the delivery, check it for consistency and dry-lay feature areas first, so veining runs the way you want and odd pieces end up in cupboards, not in the middle of the living room.

2. Flat base and the right adhesive

Stone needs a flat, sound screed and an adhesive made for natural stone — light-coloured under pale marble and limestone so it does not shadow through, exterior-grade outdoors, immersion-rated at the pool. Full coverage, no dabs.

3. Cutting and joints

Local stone and hard porcelain are cut on a wet saw with a diamond blade for clean edges. We keep joints even, place movement joints on large or sun-exposed areas and use flexible sealant at wall and threshold junctions.

4. Seal before handover

Porous stone is sealed with a penetrating, breathable sealer once it is clean and dry, and we explain the re-sealing interval for your location before we leave.

Sealing and upkeep in Bali's climate

Almost every stone we install is porous, so it is sealed on installation and re-sealed periodically — roughly once a year outdoors and in wet areas, every one to two years in dry rooms, more often on the coast. A sealed stone lets you wipe a spill away; an unsealed one drinks it in. Day to day, use pH-neutral cleaners only: acidic products etch limestone, marble and travertine. Keep damp inland surfaces ventilated and free of standing water to slow algae, and put mats at entrances so grit does not wear the surface. The full schedule and the water-drop test are in our natural stone sealing guide.

Supply and install, or your own stone

Quarry quality varies, and a stone that looks perfect in a supplier's yard can behave very differently once laid and exposed. We can source paras, palimanan, limestone, slate, terrazzo, marble and andesite, check the batch, and handle delivery, layout, cutting, fixing and sealing as one job — one team answers for the whole result, with no finger-pointing between supplier and tiler. If you have fallen for a soft stone that will not survive your poolside, we tell you before any money is spent and suggest a harder stone with a similar look. If you prefer to buy your own stone, we install it and tell you honestly whether it suits its location first.

Free site visit and fixed quote — all Bali areas

We check the base, measure and look at the stone or samples before putting the price in writing. The visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We work in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and Legian, Denpasar, Sanur, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and Ubud at the same rates, with no travel surcharge.

What is paras Bali stone?
Paras Bali is a soft, pale volcanic tuff quarried on the island and used for carved panels, temple walls and feature cladding. It carves easily and gives the distinctive Balinese look, but it is porous and soft, so it suits sheltered decorative use rather than heavy floors, and it must be sealed and kept out of constant wet or salt exposure.
Does natural stone need sealing in Bali?
Yes. Almost all natural stone used in Bali — paras, palimanan, limestone, travertine, marble and terrazzo — is porous and must be sealed with a penetrating sealer on installation and then roughly once a year, more often in coastal or heavily used areas. Skipping it leads to staining, algae and a chalky surface within one or two wet seasons.
How much does natural stone installation cost in Bali?
Labour starts from IDR 210,000 per m² for natural stone floors, walls and andesite terraces, and from IDR 240,000 per m² for Sukabumi pool stone. Stone, adhesive, grout and sealer are quoted separately, and the price is confirmed after a free site visit.
Can natural stone be used around a Bali pool?
For pool surrounds and coping, yes, if you choose a dense, anti-slip stone like andesite or a hard limestone and seal it well. We avoid soft paras and polished marble at the waterline because salt, chlorine and constant wetting attack them quickly.
Is marble a good choice for Bali villas?
Marble works well in dry, sheltered interiors such as bedrooms, dressing rooms and feature walls, and as honed flooring in bathrooms. It is soft and acid-sensitive, so it is a poor choice for kitchens, outdoor areas or anywhere exposed to salt and rain.
Do you supply the stone or just install it?
Both. We can source and install paras, palimanan, limestone, slate, terrazzo, marble or andesite as one package, or install stone you have bought yourself — after telling you honestly whether it suits its location.
