Pool Tiling in Bali: Choosing Tiles That Survive Chlorine, Salt and Sun (2026)

Published: August 23, 2026

A pool finish works harder than any other tiled surface on a villa: permanently underwater, dosed with chlorine or salt, hit by tropical sun at the waterline, riding a shell that warms and cools daily. Most failed pool finishes we inspect were decided the day the materials were chosen โ€” not the day the tiles let go. Here is how the three realistic options behave โ€” and what to do when a finish fails.

Glass Mosaic, Ceramic or Natural Stone?

  • Glass mosaic: absorbs essentially no water, shrugs off chlorine and UV, and its small format follows curved shells, benches and infinity edges cleanly. The price is precision โ€” sheets need a flat setting bed and tight, even joints, because every wobble shows underwater. The most demanding install, and the most durable.
  • Porcelain and ceramic: pool-rated porcelain is dense, colour-stable and quicker to lay in larger formats, which keeps labour down on big rectangular shells. The rating is everything: only low-absorption tile made for immersion belongs underwater โ€” ordinary interior ceramic swells, crazes and lets go.
  • Sukabumi stone: the green quartzite from West Java behind Bali's lagoon-coloured pools โ€” dense, naturally grippy and pool-suitable, but a living surface with a maintenance contract attached.

Why Sukabumi Turns Green โ€” and How to Keep the Right Green

Two different things make a Sukabumi pool green. The first you paid for: the stone's mineral content deepens into a blue-green glow when wet, and the colour matures over the first months of use. The second nobody wants: algae colonising the open pores once brushing stops and water chemistry drifts. From a deck chair they look similar; up close, one is a glow, the other a slippery film.

The routine is simple but non-negotiable: brush the surface every week, hold the water balance steady all year โ€” including the months a villa sits empty โ€” and re-seal periodically with a penetrating, breathable product, the logic we explain in our guide to natural stone sealing. Avoid harsh acid washing: it strips the surface and opens the pores, inviting the next bloom back sooner.

Grout for Pools: Epoxy or Cement?

Grout ages faster than tile in every pool, so this decision often sets the lifespan of the finish.

  • Epoxy grout absorbs almost nothing, ignores chlorine, salt systems and acidic cleaners, and holds its colour for years. It costs several times more and punishes careless application โ€” but underwater and along the waterline it is the answer that lasts.
  • Pool-grade cement grout (polymer-modified) is the economical standard and performs well when correctly specified, but it slowly erodes in aggressive water and wants checking every year or two โ€” salt-chlorinated pools are noticeably harder on it.

The Problems Bali Pools Actually Get

  • Tiles or whole mosaic sheets letting go. Almost always an adhesive story, not a tile story: a standard interior adhesive used under water, or dabbed-on coverage that left voids behind every tile.
  • Hollow spots. Tap a drained shell and listen โ€” hollow zones mean the bond has already failed even where nothing has fallen yet, and warm afternoons work the voids wider.
  • Efflorescence. White crusty streaks along the joints are minerals carried by water moving through the shell โ€” a symptom of a moisture path, not dirt, so scrubbing changes nothing. Whether the layer behind the tile was built correctly is its own subject โ€” we cover it in waterproofing before tiling.
  • The waterline failing first. The band living half wet, half dry takes chemistry, evaporation and direct sun at once, and usually ages years ahead of the fully submerged field.

Spot Repair or Full Retile?

A pool with a handful of failed tiles on an otherwise solid substrate is a repair: strip the affected patch, correct the bed, reinstate matching tile โ€” the decision logic we describe for tile repair. A pool that sounds hollow across several zones, sheds mosaic along the entire waterline or regrows efflorescence after every fix is telling you the failure is systemic โ€” patching buys months, not years, and a full strip and retile becomes the honest recommendation. A tap survey of the drained shell separates the two โ€” we sound the finish before quoting.

Timeline: What the Work Involves

Pool tiling runs on the pool's schedule, not the tiler's. The pool is drained and allowed to dry; the shell is surveyed and sounded; failed finish comes off and the substrate is repaired and trued; then setting, grouting and โ€” the stage impatient owners hate โ€” days of curing before the refill. Refill too early and the water meets adhesive that never reached strength.

A contained repair usually takes a few days plus drying time; a full retile of a villa pool is measured in weeks โ€” commonly two to four, including drain-down, substrate work and cure. Labour for pool tiling starts from IDR 200,000/mยฒ for ceramic and IDR 250,000/mยฒ for mosaic, materials quoted separately โ€” current rates on our pricing page.

Choosing between mosaic, porcelain and Sukabumi is really choosing where to spend: mosaic asks more on installation day, stone asks a little every month, porcelain sits in between.
