Grout is the part of a tiled surface that ages first, and in Bali it ages fast. Constant humidity, heavy wet-season moisture and frequent washing all work on the grout lines long before the tiles themselves show any wear. Most of the "tile problems" people contact us about are actually grout problems — and the good news is that many are preventable or fixable without re-tiling.
Mould and dark staining in grout lines is moisture plus organic matter plus time. In a humid bathroom or a shaded outdoor area the grout rarely dries out fully, so spores take hold in the slightly porous surface. Standard cement grout is absorbent unless it has been sealed, which is why an unsealed shower floor goes dark within months while a sealed one stays clean for years. The fix is rarely harsher chemicals — it is sealing the grout so moisture cannot get into it in the first place.
Start gentle: a stiff brush, warm water and a mild cleaner will lift most surface mould. For stubborn staining, an oxygen-based cleaner left to dwell works better than aggressive acids, which etch stone and degrade the grout itself over time. Avoid wire brushes on coloured grout — they polish the surface unevenly. Once the grout is clean and fully dry, apply a penetrating grout sealer; this is the step most people skip and the reason the mould comes straight back.
Cracking grout is a different story and often a warning sign. Hairline cracks along a straight run usually mean movement in the substrate or tiles — the grout is rigid and cannot flex, so it fails where the structure moves. Cracks consistently in the internal corners mean rigid grout was used where flexible silicone should have been; corners always move and grout always loses. If the grout is cracking and the tiles nearby sound hollow when tapped, the real problem is underneath — poor adhesive coverage or substrate movement — and re-grouting alone will not fix it.
Re-grouting is a quick win when the tiles are sound and only the grout has aged. But if grout is dropping out around a shower base, the tiles sound hollow, or you can see staining spreading at the foot of the wall, the issue is likely failed waterproofing beneath the tiles — water is getting in and the grout is just the first thing to show it.
